NYC Alternate Side Parking Back in Effect With New Rules You Should Know Starting Monday June 29

Alternate Side Parking (ASP) regulations are suspended through Sunday, June 28, 2020. All other parking rules remain in effect.

However, Alternate Side Parking regulations will be back in effect beginning on June 29th, but through Labor Day, residential streets will not be cleaned more than once a week on each side.

If a side of a street has an ASP sign showing multiple days, street cleaning regulations will be in effect on that side of the street only on the latest day posted on the sign. For example, if the ASP sign says the side of the street is cleaned on Mondays and Thursdays, you only have to move your car from that side of the street on Thursday.

There are no changes to:

  • Streets that have just one day of ASP regulations on each side
  • Commercial streets or metered areas

The City will assess cleanliness conditions throughout the summer to decide whether to extend or modify the new rules after Labor Day.

Mayor de Blasio stated “alternate side parking has been done the same way for a long, long time. We have to change the status quo.”

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea has named Brooklyn North Chief Jeffrey Maddrey the new head of the department’s Community Affairs Bureau. Anyone who knows Chief Maddrey understands that he naturally engages with the community, which makes this smart and obvious choice.

According to the NY Daily News, Maddrey first joined the NYPD in 1991 in Queens’ 110th Precinct and steadily climbed through the ranks, from street cop to lieutenant to assistant chief inspector before assuming his current role in Brooklyn.

Judith Harrison, new Brooklyn North Chief

Chief of Special Victims, Judith Harrison, will takeover Maddrey’s position as Chief of Brooklyn North.

In another high level NYPD change, Chief Nilda Hofmann will transition from Chief of Community Affairs to take over our Transportation Bureau where she will work closely with state and city agencies.

Here’s the tweet from the official NYPD Twitter account.

NYCHA Ramping Up Sale of Its Air Rights To Private Developers With No Affordable Housing Required In Their Proposals

Submitted by Nikki Lucas

During this time of COVID-19 and protests against police brutality, it is important to stay aware of the other important issues that will impact the lives of many New Yorkers for years to come when it comes to housing.

One issue that is of serious concern is the future of NYCHA and its residents. While 90% of the news is about COVID-19 and protests, NYCHA and city officials are going full steam ahead with the sale and leasing of NYCHA properties to private developers.

Recently it was announced that NYCHA is “Ramping Up” the sale of air rights. The sale of NYCHA air rights looks like a direct sale to private developers, which allows them to build without any need to include “affordable housing”.

According to Real Estate Weekly “a developer’s proposal does not need to include any affordable housing.”

According to a memo from Fried Frank, the revised program will create a clearinghouse of eligible sites that will allow the housing authority to review more proposals and ramp up the program.

Although many people can agree that NYCHA buildings and property need upgrades, however, this should not open the door for private developers to come in to completely control the process, which will lead to gentrification on steroids. It is a fact that private developers have been, and still are, bias against people of color. If developers control the ownership and leasing then gentrification will speed up, leaving people of color scrambling to find affordable housing.
