COVID-19 testing will be available at The Alpha School, located at 2400 Linden Boulevard in Brooklyn, on May 8, 11, 12, 13, and 14. Testing will be offered at Goble Playground, located on Goble Place between Inwood Avenue and Macomb’s Road in the Bronx, on May 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22. At both locations, testing is by appointment only, and available from 10am to 3pm.

Anyone with severe shortness of breath, a persistent cough, or a temperature above 100.5 degrees that is not responsive to medications for fever should call 718-208-2802 to inquire about a test. Testing is also available for any health care workers, first responders, or essential workers as defined by the Governor’s Executive Order: https://esd.ny.gov/guidance-executive-order-2026

“We know how important testing is – both to flatten the curve of those infected, and so that our state can begin to reopen,” said Eric S. Goldstein, CEO, UJA-Federation of New York. “We’re proud to work with Brightpoint Health in supplementing the testing available in our community, doing all we can to support New Yorkers.”

“We are pleased to bring pop-up COVID-19 testing to Brooklyn and the Bronx,” said Anne Kauffman Nolon, MPH, Chief Executive Officer of Hudson River Health Care. “Pop-up testing is a critical part of our community response against COVID-19, and we are grateful to UJA-Federation for their support in helping us expand testing. We will continue expanding our response to the COVID-19 pandemic until we prevail, for the sake of our patients and our communities.”

Brightpoint Health is pleased to provide testing as a pathway to long term care for new patients. Our health centers remain open for information and referral on COVID-19. Brightpoint is also offering telemedicine, with extended hours available. Appointments can be made by calling 1-855-681-8700, texting “telemedNYC” to 21000, or by visiting www.brightpointhealth.org. Telemedicine visits can be through video chat or a regular phone call. New patients are welcome. Current patients can schedule telemedicine visits with their regular doctor.

Aid has supported New Yorkers facing food insecurity, UJA partner organizations providing essential health and human services to New Yorkers, Jewish Community Centers, low-income students, single parents, ensuring dignified burials, and joining the $75 million NYC Covid-19 Response & Impact Fund with other leading philanthropic organizations.

Video of NYPD Officers From 75th Pct Making Violent Arrests in East New York: Is It Time To Fine Officers Personally For These Offenses?

Officer without a mask punching a bystander (screenshot from video)

Watch the Video at the bottom of the page

Last week NYPD officers from East New York’s 75th Precinct made violent arrests, while many of the officers, including the Deputy Inspector were not wearing masks, putting the public and other officers at risk. It is unimaginable that these officers are arresting residents in East New York and other similar areas throughout New York City for “Social Distancing” issues, while they are not adhering to the basic rule of wearing a mask.

See the video below, and the image of NYPD officers in another neighborhood, to see the disparity in how the NYPD interacts with residents of East New York vs how they interact with residents who hangout in Central Park, clearly violating every rule that has been put in place by Mayor De Blasio. The question one must ask is how is the enforcement of these rules so different for residents of New York City in one neighborhood vs another neighborhood.

If it has not been clear to New Yorkers before, it should definitely be clear now, the NYPD “police” every resident in East New York, Brownsville and other similar neighborhoods, while they “protect” people in Park Slope, Upper East Side and other areas in New York City. This practice has to stop. All New Yorkers need to feel “protected”, not “policed”. Officers who violate these policies should be removed the force and hit with a large personal financial fine for civil rights violations. Taking money from their personal pockets will be the only thing that will deter this type of behavior. The PBA (Police Union) should also incur millions in fines for every incident.

Nikki Lucas will be discussing these issues live on the VOICES of East New York Video Series, Sunday May 10 at 9am. Kim Council, candidate for City Council in Bushwick and East New York will be a guest on this week’s show.  Watch the show, ask questions and comment live about this issue as well as other issues that impact East New Yorkers. The show airs live on the East New York News Facebook page as well as on EastNewYork.com

Council Member Alicka Ampry-Samuel Pushes for Hiring Bill So The Economic Recovery Reaches All New Yorkers

In a recent Daily News Op-ed, Council Member Alicka Ampry-Samuel laid out her argument for new legislation aimed at removing discriminatory hiring practices, providing an equal playing field for all New Yorkers.

The 2008 Great Recession led to an economic rebound that largely benefited the rich. With the economic devastation from COVID-19 hitting non-salaried workers the most, state and federal legislators need to guide this recovery so that it doesn’t follow the same pattern as a decade ago.

A typical job opening receives 250 applicants, and only 10% of candidates are actually looked at by personnel. Since the company is inundated with resumes, HR pros take both conscious and unconscious shortcuts to pick top applicants, resulting in discrimination.

Our legislation will counter these trends and pernicious norms by paving the way for the safe usage of new types of technology-based assessments whose algorithms will be audited before they are deployed by employers.

Kim Council Defeats Brooklyn Political Machine As They Tried To Keep Her Off the City Council Ballot in District that Includes Ocean Hill

On April 29, 2020, Judge Edgar Walker ruled that, Kimberly Council and another candidate for City Council in Brooklyn’s 37th District, will be placed back on the ballot for the June 23rd NYC primary. In the midst of unprecedented and redefined times this is a win for the candidates, for the election process and, more specifically, for the residents of the City of New York.

“Judge Walker wisely decided to apply the Governor’s Executive Order precisely in the way the Governor intended it to be applied. This is a victory for democracy and a victory for the public’s health,” said Howard Graubard, attorney for Kim Council.

The ballot spots for these candidates were being contested by another candidate who had hoped to run uncontested. The challenge was based in a misinterpretation of the recent Executive Order issued by Governor Cuomo as a result of the national health crisis.

Council and the other candidates were forced to suspend petitioning and all campaign activity, as ordered by the Governor, and, instead, shifted their focus on helping the residents of the district by delivering food, running errands, and providing access to resources, even at great personal risk to their own health.

“The residents of our district deserve to choose who will represent them, and not have ‘the machine’ decide who their representative will be,” says Council. “Our collective voices deserve to be heard. I am incredibly grateful for the wisdom of Judge Walker and his application of the Governor’s intentions to put the health and safety of New Yorkers first.”

The Council for Council campaign will continue its race to support and represent the Ocean Hill, Bushwick, Cypress Hills, City Line and East New York neighborhoods striving to bring a voice to and uplift the community through this time and beyond.

East New York Resident & Teacher Dies From COVID-19 After A Frustrating Journey Through NYC Health Care System

Photo: Rana Zoe Mungin/ wellesleyunderground.com

Rana Zoe Mungin, a 30 year old graduate of Wellesley College and University of Massachusetts, and a resident of East New York, recently passed away from Coronavirus only after experiencing a frustrating ordeal through the health care system. Mungin tutored sixth-grade students in social studies at Ascend Academy in East New York

According to reports Mungin’s sister, Mia, who is a registered nurse, came home with a fever March 9 and a couple of days later Rana Zoe started running a fever.

Rana Zoe also suffered from asthma leading her family to call the ambulance due to her shortness of breath. She was turned away from an emergency room twice after developing fever, before she was finally admitted to Brookdale Hospital on March 20.  Her sister stated, in reports, that the hospital didn’t want to give her sister a COVID-19 test because there was a shortage of kits.

The next day Rana Zoe had to be put on a ventilator and she was treated with the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, with no success.

After appeals by family, friends and  Senator Chuck Schumer, Rana Zoe was eventually transferred to Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan for treatment. Her condition seemed to improve before taking a turn for the worse. Rana Zoe woke up after being on a ventilator for a month, but she had developed an infection that required antibiotics. Her condition quickly deteriorated and she developed heart arrhythmia,  Rana Zoe died Monday.

In a quote from ABC News, her friend for more than a decade, Nohemi Maciel stated, “She died not only because of COVID-19, but because we live in a world that is racist and anti-black. We know that black people are dying at disproportionate rates. This cannot be left out of the conversation.”
