CRAFTPALOOZA LAUNCHES CITYWIDE SEARCH

From the onset, CraftPalooza was created to be a platform for a super talented individual, who needed an outlet to showcase their creativity.  Founded by HealthJox Foundation’s Executive Director – Dewry DuRoi Bradford, he launched CraftPalooza on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at the Tillary Hotel Ballroom located at 85 Flatbush Avenue Extension – Brooklyn, NY 11201.  This “free event” presented over 30-top street artists, models, and performers.  Given Brooklyn’s reputation for its robust creative culture, it was a natural choice to launch in the borough synonymous with Biggie and the Brooklyn Nets.  CraftPalooza proved to be an authentic, nostalgic, Brooklyn experience for the entire family.  Attendees enjoyed healthy food and drinks as they vibed with some of the most talented creatives in the city of New York.

Award-winning artist, mentor and inventor – Marco Santini’s art sold for $1,000 during CraftPalooza.

As Dewry DuRoi and the CraftPalooza Team continue to expand the brand, the importance of involving NYC’s youth in projects that inspire them to enhance their talents and discover how to monetize their creativity becomes increasingly evident. Dewry DuRoi emphasizes, “If our youth cannot find a pathway to success through nurturing their talents, they risk leading unfulfilled lives by not pursuing their passions and purposes.” He further explains, “CraftPalooza was conceived to provide our talented youth with clear opportunities. It also aims to introduce young individuals, not only to the creative aspects but also to the business side of things, encouraging them to explore careers in management and production. There’s a role suited for everyone.”

Live performances at CraftPalooza (TripleJ, Fadee & JaredSB) and CorDuRoi fashion show.

HEALTHJOX EXPANDS “BROWNSVILLE SHINES” WITH EXOUSIA THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

Envisioned by Missionary Bishop – Dr. Lester Bradford, founder of Exousia Cathedral and spearheaded by President and Elder Elect – Lucia Bradford, “Brownsville Shines” serviced the community of Brownsville from its inception.  Originally launched as a Christmas tree lighting event, Brownsville Shines was known by community members as the Christmas event.  Attendees would enjoy a festive atmosphere consisting of Christmas caroling and thoughtful wishes, while enjoying refreshments that guaranteed warmth in the hearts of all participants.  In grand tradition, the peak of the event concluded with the actual lighting of the Christmas tree which erected directly in the front-center of the building.  With brightened eyes and gasps that can be heard from the elated hearts of the children and the young at heart; the colorful lights that glistened off the green pine leaves, invigorated the spirit of love, hope and happiness.

As Elder Elect Lucia’s singing career reached new heights and her schedule became increasingly demanding with both international and domestic commitments, the opportunity arose for Teniesha Bradford to step into the role of President.  In 2022, for the 10th year anniversary of Brownsville Shines, HealthJox Foundation, Inc. founder, Dewry DuRoi Bradford, partnered with Exousia Cathedral to produce the event.  This action enabled attendees to access an expanded range of services. Through strategic partnerships, HealthJox Foundation was able to hand out some of the most coveted toys to Brownsville’s youth after the tree lighting ceremony.  Furthermore, they offered a diverse array of unconventional presents for adults seeking to alleviate their holiday expenses. These offerings encompassed household appliances, cleaning supplies, sneakers, slippers, clothing, coats, juices, hair care items, canned and dry goods, all provided at no cost.  Furthermore, the initial 200 attendees who registered at the outset of the event were awarded complimentary phones and $10 tablets, along with a six-year service plan at no cost. Noteworthy was the presence of Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, who delivered an inspiring address to the community, concluding with the iconic lyrics of Biggie Smalls: “Spread love, it’s the Brooklyn way.”

According to HealthJox Founder, Dewry DuRoi: “Last year (2023), was our biggest service offering yet!  On Saturday, December 16, 2023, through collaboration with Brooklyn Health Equity Foundation and Toys For Tots, HealthJox Foundation and Exousia Cathedral was able to provide over 500-toys for the Youth as well as donate 200 toys to “Clothed With Love” which is as organization founded by Pastor Denese Hall in Bushwick, Brooklyn.”

Multiple food giveaway events in the Community of Brownsville.

The remarkable strength of 2023 stemmed from our transformation of every food giveaway, organized by Exousia Cathedral’s Home Missions department under the leadership of Pastor Constance Wright, into a vibrant occasion featuring banners, a live DJ (DJ Argyle), and an engaging MC. Through strategic alliances with Fenix Community Fridge, Trader Joe’s, Grow Brownsville, and the enthusiastic support of volunteers from Origins High School, we were able to aid over 1,000 Brooklyn residents not only during the Tree Lighting event but throughout the entirety of 2023.

This year, 2024 we expand our efforts officially to produce multiple “Brownsville Shines” giveaways throughout the year with a special giveaway on Thanksgiving Day in collaboration with Trader Joe’s called “Meat Lovers Food Giveaway” which was truly a hit last year.

As of now, these are the official dates for upcoming outreach events, all set to take place at 693 Ralph Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, 11212:

  • Saturday, April 27th
  • Saturday, July 13th
  • Saturday, September 7th
  • Saturday, November 9th
  • Thursday, November 28th (Thanksgiving Day)

Income Requirements of A $90,240 – $227,630 For Affordable Housing in Brownsville Hits New Highs

We all know that “affordable” housing is not a real thing in New York City, but this newly announced “affordable housing” development on New York City’s Housing Connect, which is New York City’s official affordable housing platform, cannot be real.

Here’s the Announcement on the NYC Housing Connect Website

456 Blake Avenue Apartments is offering 3 newly constructed units in Brooklyn. New York City is committed to the principle of inclusivity in all of its neighborhoods, including supporting New Yorkers to reside in neighborhoods of their choice, regardless of their neighborhood of origin and regardless of the neighborhood into which they want to move. To request an application by mail, send a self-addressed envelope to 456 Blake Avenue Apartments C/O Reside New York, 349 Keap Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211. Only send one application per development. The tenant is responsible for electricity including electric stove, electric heat, and electric hot water.

Affordable Housing Program

This building is anticipated to receive a Tax Exemption through the 421a Tax incentive program of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

What you should consider

The 421a Tax Incentive means the developers are receiving Tax Breaks.

The fact that rents start at $2,520 for 1 bedroom tells you all you need to know. Brownsville and East New York have quietly been on the road to gentrification, but this makes it loud and clear that gentrification is official in the last 2 neighborhoods in NYC, which had been somewhat affordable. Who do we blame? Elected officials? Yes. Elected officials are supposed to be advocates for the people, but the lobbyists have gotten in their pockets through donations to campaigns. “The People” do not have a lobbyist, but the truth is the elected officials are supposed to be their lobbyists.

If you want to see the list of “affordable” apartments for this listing click here.

Something has to change when tenants and homeowners are both unhappy. The only ones who are happy these days are developers and politicians. If you are a renter or homeowner, you must look to your elected official to find out what they are doing and from whom they are accepting money. If they are accepting money from developers or hotel lobbyists, then they are not advocating for you.

Brooklyn Hip Hop Artist ‘Kota the Friend’ Publishes His First Children’s Book Introducing Them to the World of Travel

Today, Brooklyn rapper, songwriter, record producer, and world traveler Kota the Friend has embarked on his latest venture with the official release of his children’s book, title Kota In Sedona.

Kota in Sedona is a heartwarming tale that takes young readers on a captivating journey filled with adventure, discovery, and parental bonding. The story follows the adventures of Little Kota, as he and his dad travel to and through Sedona, Arizona. Based on some of his own music, this lyric-like story explores this magical town’s sights, wonders, and uniqueness.

Kota the Friend stated, “Many of my songs are titled after locations where I have travelled. I had no idea as a child that most of these destinations even existed. If children are introduced to different places throughout the US and around the world it will open their mind to the possibilities. I know my son loves to travel now, and children learn so much by travelling.”

The book draws inspiration from Kota’s personal journeys with his son, aiming to familiarize urban city families with potential travel destinations. By exposing children to travel experiences, it opens their minds to new possibilities and introduces them to a world beyond their immediate surroundings. Growing up in Brooklyn himself, Kota always felt a sense of curiosity about life beyond New York. This awareness led him to recognize the vastness of life, nature, and breathtaking experiences awaiting outside the city. Kota has passed on these values to his own children, motivating him to share this important lesson with other urban city kids.

Kota is known to include locations in his song titles such as “COLORADO,” “MILAN,” “YUMA,” “OREGON,” “TULUM” and “VIETNAM” for example, and he intends to maintain this thematic approach in future books, wherein he and Little Kota will explore different parts of the world.

Additionally, Kota is coming off the heels of releasing his latest album Lyrics to GO, vol. 5.  In the new project, he embraces vulnerability and emotional depth in his music – and his new album is a processing of times and places, observed and felt, creating parallel experiences for adults to enjoy themselves.

As an astute storyteller, Kota creates relatable music that resonates with the mind and comforts the soul, and Kota In Sedona hopes to create a comforting curiosity for kids who dream of traveling.

Kota In Sedona officially released March 8th, 2024 and will appear on all major online retail platforms including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books a Million, Walmart, Booktopia, Apple, and Kobo to name a few.

The paperback was made affordable as it retails for $16.99, and the eBook retails for $8.99.  –

10 Tips On Navigating the New York City Housing Lottery Process

The New York City Housing Lottery offers affordable housing opportunities across the five boroughs, and it’s a great way to find a more affordable place to live in a city known for its high rental prices. Here are some tips to navigate and increase your chances in the NYC Housing Lottery:

  1. Understand the Requirements: Each housing lottery has its own set of income and household size requirements. Make sure you understand these requirements before applying. Your household income must fall within the specified range for the unit you’re interested in.
  2. Keep Your Documentation Ready: You will need to provide proof of income, identification, and other documents. Having these documents ready can speed up the application process.
  3. Apply Online: Use the NYC Housing Connect website to apply. Create an account and keep your profile updated with your current income, household size, and contact information.
  4. Apply to Multiple Lotteries: Don’t limit yourself to just one lottery. Apply to as many as you qualify for to increase your chances of winning a spot.
  5. Be Patient: The process can take a long time, sometimes even years from the application to move-in. Keep applying and be patient.
  6. Check Your Email Regularly: Notifications about your application status will be sent via email. Make sure to check your email regularly and respond promptly to any requests for additional information or documents.
  7. Attend the Interview Prepared: If you’re selected for an interview, bring all requested documents and be prepared to answer questions about your application.
  8. Understand the Preferences: Some lotteries have preferences for community residents, municipal employees, or people with disabilities. If you qualify for any of these preferences, your chances of being selected may increase.
  9. Stay Updated: Housing lottery opportunities open up regularly. Keep checking the NYC Housing Connect website for new listings.
  10. Seek Assistance if Needed: If you’re unsure about the application process or need help, consider reaching out to a local housing counseling agency. They can provide guidance and help you navigate the process.

Remember, the key to the NYC Housing Lottery is persistence. Keep applying, and eventually, you might find yourself with an affordable housing option in New York City.

10 Effective Strategies To Encourage Children to Eat Healthy Meals

by HealthyNYC.com / distributed by NYC Newswire

Getting picky children to eat healthily can be a challenge, but there are effective strategies to encourage them to embrace a wider range of foods. Here are ten ways to help:

  1. Involve Them in Meal Preparation: Children are more likely to try foods they’ve helped prepare. Let them pick vegetables to add to meals or assist in simple tasks like stirring or assembling ingredients.
  2. Introduce New Foods Alongside Favorites: Serve a new or less preferred food alongside something you know they like. This can make the new food seem less intimidating.
  3. Make Food Fun: Use cookie cutters to create shapes out of fruits, vegetables, or sandwiches, or arrange food on the plate in a creative, appealing way.
  4. Eat Together as a Family: Children model their behavior on what they see. Eating together as a family can encourage them to try foods they see adults enjoying.
  5. Offer Choices Within Limits: Instead of asking open-ended questions about what they want to eat, offer a choice between two healthy options. This gives them a sense of control while keeping options nutritious.
  6. Start with Small Portions: Large portions can be overwhelming, so start with a small amount of new foods alongside more familiar ones.
  7. Be Patient with New Foods: It can take several exposures to a new food before a child is willing to try it. Don’t give up too quickly.
  8. Avoid Bribing or Forcing: Using food as a reward or forcing children to eat can create negative associations with eating.
  9. Educate About Nutrition: Teach them why certain foods are healthy in a fun and engaging way, such as through stories or interactive games.
  10. Lead by Example: Show enthusiasm for trying and enjoying healthy foods yourself. Your behavior can inspire your children to follow suit.

Implementing these strategies requires patience and consistency, but over time, they can significantly influence your child’s eating habits, leading to a healthier diet and a more positive attitude towards food.

Is the NYC Affordable Housing Program Truly Affordable With Income Requirements As High As $190,000 per Year?

Content distributed by NYCNewswire.com

The New York City housing lottery, part of the city’s Affordable Housing initiative, is designed to provide below-market-rate housing options to eligible participants, including low- to middle-income families, seniors, and disabled individuals. While the program aims to make housing more affordable for those who meet specific income requirements, the perception of affordability can vary widely among applicants.

Several factors contribute to the ongoing discussions about the affordability of the NYC housing lottery:

  1. Income Bands: The housing lottery includes a range of income bands, from extremely low income to moderate-income levels. However, the upper limits of these bands can sometimes be close to the median income for the city, making some argue that the apartments are not affordable enough for those in the greatest need.
  2. Rent Prices: Even though lottery apartments are offered at below-market rates, the rents can still be high relative to the income limits, especially in more desirable neighborhoods. This situation can lead some to spend a significant portion of their income on rent, challenging the notion of affordability.
  3. Supply and Demand: With a high demand for affordable housing in NYC and a limited supply of available units through the lottery, many who apply do not win a spot, leading to frustration and a sense of the program being inaccessible.
  4. Area Median Income (AMI) Adjustments: The affordability of lottery apartments is tied to the Area Median Income (AMI), which is subject to change. As the AMI increases, so do the income limits for eligible applicants, potentially making some units less affordable for lower-income applicants.
  5. Variability by Development: The affordability and desirability of lottery apartments can vary significantly by development, with some offering more amenities and lower rents relative to others. This variability can impact perceptions of overall affordability.

While the NYC housing lottery has been successful in providing thousands of affordable units to New Yorkers, the challenges mentioned above highlight the complexity of addressing affordable housing in a city with high living costs.

An example of this program not being truly affordable can be found with 80 Linden Blvd. in East Flatbush, where a 1 bedroom under the NYC affordable housing program is going for $3,253 per month, with an income requirement between  $111,532 – $165,23 per year. Let us know you think that’s affordable.
