Students can now enroll in &#8220;Introduction to the World of Cannabis,&#8221; a prerequisite course for many of the other cannabis courses in this degree program. In following semesters, students can choose four courses from any of the 13 newly developed courses to earn a cannabis degree minor in one of four different tracks. These courses provide educational opportunities not only to MEC students but to all students at the other 24 CUNY campuses via e-permits. Exemplifying its core mission to provide educational workforce development and opportunities for economic expansion, MEC&#8217;s cannabis minor and forthcoming adult education program will feature the skill-building instructional support needed to foster new cannabis leaders in the areas of testing, cultivation, business, and health.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a botanist, I&#8217;m particularly pleased to see that the institution that I&#8217;ve been selected to lead is on the cutting edge of providing educational opportunities to learn about the many beneficial uses of plants such as cannabis and to provide the training necessary for our students to be able to compete for burgeoning opportunities in this new industry. Education is a key step in raising awareness of the non-recreational benefits of plants such as cannabis.\u00a0Oftentimes, communities of color are the last to benefit from emerging economic opportunities.\u00a0The science faculty and the business faculty collaborated in developing the minor in cannabis education; thus, exposing the students to the science, health, technical and business aspects of this new industry,&#8221; said\u00a0<b>Dr.\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Patricia Ramsey<\/span>, president of\u00a0<span class=\"xn-org\">Medgar Evers College<\/span><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Coinciding with\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">New York State&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0recent adult-use cannabis legalization, the program seeks to engage degree and non-degree students, faculty and staff, advocacy groups, and community members, including the formerly incarcerated and those transitioning from the legacy market. The program can serve as a resource for policy-makers through its diverse instructors and partnerships and support with organizations, multi-state operators, and state license holders including the cannabis leadership organization\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3272099-1&amp;h=2962704351&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwomengrow.com%2F&amp;a=Women+Grow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Women Grow<\/a><\/u>, the iconic\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3272099-1&amp;h=3370513115&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fcookies.co%2F&amp;a=Cookies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Cookies<\/a><\/u>\u00a0cannabis brand, the\u00a0<b>Webber Wild Impact Fund<\/b>\u00a0led by five-time NBA All-Star, 2021 Basketball Hall of Fame\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3272099-1&amp;h=2635507583&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.webberhealthandwellness.com%2F&amp;a=Chris+Webber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"xn-person\">Chris Webber<\/span><\/a><\/u>, medical dispensary giant\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3272099-1&amp;h=3763291700&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fcol-care.com%2F&amp;a=Columbia+Care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Columbia Care<\/a><\/u>, influential\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3272099-1&amp;h=3837603136&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fcannabisadvisorygroup.org%2F&amp;a=Cannabis+Advisory+Group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Cannabis Advisory Group<\/a><\/u>, and\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">NYC<\/span>\u00a0community-focused foundation\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3272099-1&amp;h=3440531394&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fgothamgives.org%2F&amp;a=Gotham+Gives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Gotham Gives<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The significance of a cannabis minor at\u00a0<span class=\"xn-org\">Medgar Evers College<\/span>\u00a0is not lost upon those familiar with the legacy of its namesake who fought for civil rights. We believe this program and future cannabis programs at MEC will serve as a model for other institutions of higher learning that can respond to socio-economic shifts through programming centered on community needs. Too often, colleges located in neighborhoods that once served as the battlegrounds in the failed war on drugs, are denied access to pivotal opportunities. MEC&#8217;s program speaks to those needs and we applaud their action. The taskforce consists of four members, two faculty and two alumni. The faculty leads are\u00a0<b>Dr.\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Alicia Reid<\/span><\/b>, chair of the Chemistry and Environmental Sciences department, and\u00a0<b>Dr.\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Micah Crump<\/span><\/b>, professor of Business and Entrepreneurship. Alumni\u00a0<b><span class=\"xn-person\">Vikiana Clement<\/span><\/b>, a corporate software engineer, and entrepreneur, and<b>\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Joel Strothers<\/span><\/b>, a civil and environmental engineering Ph.D. student at\u00a0<span class=\"xn-org\">Princeton University<\/span>, round out the team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The central tenet of this entire program is to achieve targeted outcomes that will elevate a community that has been sidelined, blocked out, stifled, alienated, and even forgotten because of the devastating and adverse impact of the U.S.&#8217;s historical war on drugs and associated cannabis policies,&#8221; said\u00a0<b>Dr.\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Alicia Reid<\/span><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>MEC is located next to the site of Ebbets Field, the legendary home of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The college was founded\u00a0in 1970 in honor of\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Medgar Wiley Evers<\/span>, the American civil rights activist, and\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Mississippi<\/span>\u00a0state\u00a0field secretary for\u00a0the NAACP.
